Something interesting happened the other day. It does make me look stupid, but then again, so does the mirror and I don’t let that bother me. For the last 6-7 months, I have been all over Alberta and staying in lots of hotel rooms. Most times I tote my laptop around so I can play games or do serious theological study. I also like to check the email in case something pressing needs to be accomplished. Just like Dave Ramsey said, about the phone, in his latest book, “I don’t know why I bother, it’s never for me.” Anyway, I digress.

Seemingly at every hotel, I have huge issues getting online with their free wireless internet and do lucky to get 5 good minutes in before the circus of restarts and cold boots begins. None of that ever helps but I do it just the same. Then recently I made an earth shattering discovery! I had 2 different internet connection programs running at the same time. Duh! Why did that take months to figure out? So much for that college diploma I got in IT back in New Brunswick.

After, I realized that we do the same thing in our walk with God. We try to connect with God while at the same time maintaining our connection with the world; and wonder why it never works out. Why is everything so hard? It’s like that old saying, 2 steps forward and one step back; or even worse, 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Our problem is exactly like my computer in that we have 2 different programs running with the same hardware. Matthew 6:24 and Luke 16:13 tells us that we can’t serve God and mammon(the world). It’s time to uninstall the world from our heart and release all our resources to the Lord’s side. Only then will we eliminate any more connection problems with the King.

Last week, an interesting thing happened at work. This particular event does happen more than you would think it should given all of today’s technology and so forth. I had an order to deliver to a customer just 15 minutes out of a northeastern town here in Alberta. It seemed like it would be easy enough, or so I thought…
1. Vehicle - check
2. Products - check
3. Customer name - check
4. Address - check
5. Directions - not so much
I would assume that the sales rep knew where the store was and the store owner knew where it was, but nobody had thought to convey that information to the driver. I was filling-in for another driver who had been doing this route for 6 or 7 months, so he knew where to go and there hadn’t been any issues until now. It should also be noted that the cell-phone coverage was terrible. So after a drive back toward town so I could make 6 phone calls to different people to find out the answer, all was well and everything worked out.

On my way home, I was thinking over the incident and how bad the communication was that I had a gotcha moment. In the Bible (II Samuel 12:1-10), Nathan was telling King David a story about a rich man who stole another poor man’s only sheep. David was extremely upset and declared the man would die for his sin. Nathan looked him in the eye and said, “You are the man!” That’s what I call a gotcha moment. Ever had one of those? It’s usually daily for me.

How many times have I given people responsibility over a department or ministry in the church and told them what I envisioned it would look like? Only to forget to give them directions on how to get there. Then when they ask me how to get there, I’m completely vague on what to do. Sort of like those 6 phone calls. If it takes more than one conversation, the directions weren’t clear enough. You can have the other 5 conversations if you want, but they should be about encouragement and making sure we are still on the course we planned together.

The funny part is, I’ve also been given responsibility without direction and hated every minute of it. Sometimes we think that by giving directions we are dictating. That is a lie and also a recipe for burn-out and frustration. Why make people recreate the wheel?

Any job worth doing is worth doing well. Ever heard that? How about this? Any job worth doing, is worth doing well and is worth directing well. Try saying that 5 times in a row. The next time we ask a member in the church to take on a new responsibility, we must also give them the directions as well as the mission and goal. I think we would see a lot less frustration from our leaders and we would probably even have more people want to get involved when they see how others succeed instead of watching people style their way into failure.

Remember, divers get style points but always finish under water.
Try looking up Mark Lowry’s song First Class, Wrong Flight
